Baselworld 2014 Highlights 27th March – 3rd April 2014

As the exciting events at Baselworld 2014 draw to a close, one of the biggest events in the luxury watch and jewellery industry calendar has again seen the launch of some amazing collections, providing the ideal platform for showcasing the latest trends in jewellery and timepieces.

The show itself dates back as early as 1917, with watches and jewellery featuring as part of the first ever event then named Schweizer Mustermesse Basel, with the show taking place each year in the cultural city of Basel in Switzerland.

With last year’s event having welcomed over 122,000 visitors from across the global, Baselworld 2014 was set to be even bigger with striking timepieces featuring at the show included the Breitling for Bentley GMT Light Body B04, a self-winding chronograph and the Bentley 6.75 Midnight Carbon launched in homage to Bentley’s largest engine of 6.75 litres. Bell& Ross B-Rocket watches reflected their collaboration with Shaw Harley Davidson on the B-Rocket motorcycle design, sure to be a hit with racing fanatics. Carrying on the racing theme, the Mille Miglia 2014 from Chopard celebrated the 25th anniversary of the collaboration between the family business and the Mille Miglia classic car rally, which they both sponsor and participate in. Chopard also bought a world first to Baselworld with its L.U.C. Tourbillon QF Fairmined, the world’s first watch to be created from Fairmined gold which has also earned the Qualite Fleurier mark.

Raymond Weil’s Collection including the Nabucco range sees the incorporation of new materials in the collection’s stylish design, including the use by them of ceramics for the first time in their refined bezel. Rotary’s Revelation also featured at the show, with the practical timepiece that offers two watch faces within one watch, allowing for keeping track of two time zones with ultimate stlye.

The artistic creations of MB&F mixed the talents of Max Busser and Xia Hang, with the Legacy Machine 1 the incredible result.  A piece of performance art that can be worn and used with Xia’s design of Comma men moving as the time passes.  Amazing artist creations were also on offer by MB&F in collaboration with L’Epee 1839, with their Starfleet intergalactic clock designed to mark L’Epee’s 175th Anniversary.

Swarovski unveiled their collection for Autumn Winter 14/15 named Facets of Light, designs which are achieved through the use light to accentuate their beautiful crystals, with technology, LEDS and holograms also involved in the design process.  Trend colours featuring in Swarovski’s collections include emerald greed, fuchsia and petrol blue, also combining the use of mixed metal platings.

In keeping with striking colours trending this autumn, jewellery from Victor Mayer’s Trance Collection saw lichen green, sundance and rich red enamels set with diamonds in 18 carat rings. Another exclusive to Baselworld 2014 was Yoko London’s Vigneto Collection which included the rare sight of deep violet freshwater pearls, these one off pieces included incredible pearl and diamond rings set in white gold, perfectly enhancing the beauty of the unusual pearls.

Rose gold is also a continuing trend with Swarovski, Festina, Bering and Lotus amongst those featuring rose gold jewellery and watches in their latest collections.  Italian designers Casato also showcased an intricate rose gold and white diamond bracelet ring, together with beautiful earrings in their Daphne Collection.

As well as displaying the world thinnest tourbillon in The Master Graff Ultra Flat Collection, the most expensive piece ever to appear at the show mesmerised onlookers in the form of a ladies timepiece named Hallucination also by Graff shown above.  The famous diamond jewellers unveiled a 110-carat creation with an array of rare and colourful diamonds, with a price tag of a staggering $55m set for this sculptural masterpiece.

Baselworld 2015 takes place from March 19th to March 26th.
