Possibly The Most Expensive Coloured Diamond In The World?

Weighing in at an absolutely staggering 59.60 carats, or 11.92 grams if you prefer, the stunning and completely flawless stone known as the Pink Star is due to go up for auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva in November. Rated as ‘Fancy Vivid Pink’ in colour by the Gemological Institute of America, it was formally called the Steinmetz Pink.

Known for being the largest diamond rated as ‘Vivid Pink’ in the world, after its discovery by De Beers in South Africa in 1999, the Steinmetz Group took caution when polishing and cutting the gem, dedicating a whole 20 months to the process.

Officially unveiled in Monaco on the 29th May 2003 in a public ceremony, the Pink Star went on to be displayed alongside some other world famous gems, such as the De Beers Millennium Star and the Heart of Eternity Diamond before being sold privately in 2007. However, the name of the buyer and the cost was not recorded publically.

Expected to far exceed £40 million at auction, the Pink Star will mark its name in the history books as one of the rarest jewels every to be sold, exceeding the £29 million that the Graff Pink was sold at auction for 16th November 2010 at Sotherby’s, Geneva.
